The former Brazilian leader has been taken into custody after authorities concluded he posed a definite escape threat while under domestic detention.

The one-time leader was sentenced of orchestrating a military coup in last fall and handed more than a 27-year term in prison, but he was staying under confinement pending legal challenges.

High Court Judge Justice Moraes said the move to detain the septuagenarian politician was a precautionary step after fresh information emerged.

This included trying to remove his electronic bracelet and a summons to a public vigil that could facilitate a possible escape.

Judicial Records Show Flight Fears

In a document approving the arrest, Justice Moraes said information from the facility tracking the former president's confinement suggested the ex-president's plan to remove the tracking monitor to secure accomplishment in his flight.

This, it said, would be "facilitated by the disorder caused by the gathering called by his son.

His offspring, his son Flávio, who works as a legislator, called for a meeting of his supporters near his father's house to take place on the weekend.

Flávio Bolsonaro wrote on social media on the previous day: Do you plan to struggle for your country, or see it all from your smartphone there on your sofa? I invite you to struggle with us."

He said the demonstration would be so followers could seek divine intervention for his physical condition and for the restoration of democratic rule in our country."

Diplomatic Refuge Fears

They also petitioned that the former president be permitted to depart his residence for healthcare, saying he needed frequent medical attention for pulmonary infections and other illnesses.

Background on Conviction

The former president was determined responsible of heading a conspiracy aimed at retaining his authority after he failed to win the national vote to his ideological adversary, Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva.

Supreme Court justices said that he knew of a plan which included plans to murder his opponent and his VP candidate, his vice-presidential candidate, and to imprison and murder the presiding judge - the High Court judge who has been managing Bolsonaro's trial.

The one-time head of state called the court case a "witch hunt and said it was intended to stop him participating in the 2026 presidential election.
